Congratulations to Prof. Ric Kaner on receiving the Basolo Award for outstanding contributions to inorganic chemistry during his visit to Northwestern University.

Dr. Maher El-Kady (Ph.D. ’13) is featured in the Chemistry Shorts film Energy to Spare: Building Better Batteries, showcasing his research on zinc-ion batteries as a safer, more sustainable alternative to lithium-ion technology. Several Kaner group graduate students (Gray Carson, Isabelle Davis, Puyuan Du, Bradley Kroes, Haemin (Joanne) Oh, and Zhiyin (Tara) Yang) also appear in the film, which blends engaging visuals with insights into next-generation energy storage for the renewable energy era.

Congratulations to Sophia Uemura on receiving the Michael E. Jung Excellence in Teaching Award for her exceptional instruction of undergraduate students. Congratulations also to Andrew Huang, awarded the Chemistry & Biochemistry Alumni Undergraduate Research Fellowship to continue his research in the Kaner group this summer.


As of August 2024, Dr. Kaner’s research has surpassed 100,000 citations, reflecting his lasting impact and influence in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Prof Kaner has been named on the annual Highly Cited Researchers™ 2023 list from Clarivate, placing them among world’s most influential scholars, based on citations.
Congratulations to Spencer Hamilton for being awarded the John Staffer Excellence in Second year Research and Awards Additionally, Yuto Katsuyama was awarded 2023 Ralph and Charlene Bauer Graduate Award for his research in batteries.
Lastly, congratulations to undergraduates working in the lab (Angel and Celeste) for receiving departmental fellowships to continue their research in the summer. And lastly big congratulations to every recipient at the ceremony!


In recognition of receiving the Mautner Graduate Awards, each student will receive a $5,000 prize and will attend a dinner with the 2018 Mautner Memorial Lecture Series Distinguished Guest Lecturer, Nobel Laureate Sir Fraser Stoddart. The awards will be presented at the Mautner Public Lecture on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.The Mautner Graduate Awards recognize currently enrolled meritorious graduate students who are conducting research in the areas related to the topic of the Mautner Research Lecture. Stoddart’s topic is “Engines through the Ages.”

Ric received this award for outstanding contributions to solid-state synthesis, energy storage materials and super hard materials.
